During my second watch of Nu Who, I was able to fully appreciate WHY Moffat and co. were shoving Clara down our throats-it was necessary for her particular story arc. (But, also, I actually really liked Clara in S8 & 9, because S7 Clara was a plot device).
I really liked “The Caretaker” for many reasons, and yes, not for the monster.
I loved the running theme of duality, betrayal and lies which runs throughout Series 8, and it begins to come into focus first in this episode. Clara trying to juggle two separate lives, and her trying her very best to keep it separate is also very consistent in how she is a control freak- she wants to keep these separate so that it doesn’t become to confusing for her.

Have you read my review of Kill the Moon yet, because I briefly touch on the subject of betrayal, which you are so right about, it’s the central theme of series 8.
And the betrayals actually come in various forms, from Clara kinda sort of having an affair with both The Doctor and Danny, to The Doctor lying about being all jealous and other stuff, to Missy lying about Galifrey, and well the lies that The Doctor and Clara tell each other in the end, oh and Danny saving the child he accidentally shot instead of himself. Betrayal comes in various shades in this series and it’s great, because they have a cast of actors who can really pull it off.

Just read and commented! But yes, I did see just now that you mentioned that. Yeah. Clara and the Doctor really LIED to each other a lot. And yes, you are right, these set of actors were really good and right for this, as you said. 😀

To be fair, I think the Doctor kicked off the whole lying thing, with the Impossible Girl story line. Admittedly, he didn’t know exactly what was going on, but probably more than any other Doctor, since the Dark Wizard of hate that was 7th Doctor, 11 lies a lot.

So who lied more, 11 or 7? 😀

7 lies all the time, and in Nu Who 11 is the big liar. They both lie, and manipulate.

11 is quite a dark character. Especially after the exit of The Ponds.

IMO if 11 was played by another actor, I think the darkness might be too much. But Matt Smith has this way of making everything seem okay, when it really, really isn’t.

I am really looking forward to where they go in terms of character for 13, and while I would love to see her paired up again with Bill and even maybe Heather. I think the new showrunner, will want a go at creating his own companions/companion. I’d love to see another party tardis, as I love a tardis packed with characters.
BTW party tardis translates as 5th Doctor’s Tardis, since he has Tegan and Nyssa and Adric and Ginger Moany one.

That is so true. Smith’s take allowed the Doctor to have a dark edge to it, but masked with his childlike tendencies, which, yes, made it easier to bear. I was thinking about Bill the other day, and I think that I would maybe like a cameo from her and Heather, but it’s also okay with me if they don’t. And yes, Chibnall will probably create his own companions. Ginger Moany one is Turlough right? Hahaha. Well, I trust Chibnall with more of ensemble cast rather than Moffat because he knows how to balance it all out, as seen in Broadchurch. I think a full TARDIS would be fun. And yes, meaning more than two others in the TARDIS at the same time. 😀

Yes the ginger moany one is Turlough, he’s not that bad, he’s not Adric.
I am sort of hoping for an alien companion. That or a sort of Jamie type, from the past, I sort of wish Clara Prime had been the Victorian version of herself.
A full Tardis is the best, those last episodes of 10, with all the companions in the Tardis were great.
I hope if Bill does come back, she’s with Heather, cus I really like those crazy kids, and it would be great to see a super positive gay/alien/robot relationship.

I would have LOVED the Victorian Clara to be Clara Prime. 😀 Yes, I’d love to have a companion that isn’t from present day. That would be really refreshing.

Glad I’m not the only one, she just seemed interesting.
I really love Jamie, I think he’s a great companion and it would be great if they did that again, but not the way they did with Victoria, not sure if I’m making sense there.
I’d either like a historical companion, or an alien, maybe build up the races we have already seen like Adric’s or Turlough’s, or even Astrid Peths, because they look so human, and they are really into human culture, but they are not human at all.

That would be interesting! I really like Leela as well.
I think most people liked Victorian Clara because we were finally seeing Jenna Coleman again and more of her after they teased us with Asylum of the Daleks. So when Clara Prime showed up and she was just as plucky as Victorian Clara, it didn’t feel refreshing anymore.

Technically though Leela wasn’t an alien, but Leela is one of my favourite companions.
Plus, there wasn’t enough difference between the three versions. If Oswin and Clara Oswin Oswald were pale copies of Clara Prime, there wasn’t enough of a quirk in their individual personalities, plus they were brought up with completely different background.

Yeah, Leela wasn’t technically an alien but I really did love her as a companion. I felt though that they weren’t able to develop her enough, although I hear that the Big Finish stuff did develop her character more. Re Clara- you are right. There should have been a little bit of a difference between them. I loved Oswin’s accent the best though, and I really loved Murray Gold’s theme for Clara.

This is weird, but Clara’s theme always reminded me a bit of Belle’s in Beauty and the Beast. Yeah, Clara’s theme was great.

Although if I’m honest I can’t remember Amy or Bill’s themes.
I hope Gold stays for the next series.
Btw love your spider man review.
My mummy on the orient express is up as well, I’d love to get any advice or crit, you can offer.

For me that’s also a big question. I don’t know if Chibnall will keep Gold or get someone else. But I really do love is work.
Martha’s theme for me was very distinct as it was used during the series as well.
I personally love Little Amy (Little Amy’s Theme), but Amy’s real theme is really entitled Amy’s theme.
Bill’s theme, or rather the salsa version is played in The Pilot, when she’s explaining stuff to the Doctor. However, my favorite version, the orchestral version was played recently in a live event:
Bill’s theme is very adventurous and full of hope. I love the orchestral version a lot.
P.S. I hope the YouTube links actually show.

Especially towards the end of his run. I feel that Smith GREW into the character, unlike Eccleston and Tennant.

Yes, again agree.
Eccleston it’s hard to tell, I think there wasn’t much more they could do with him as a character, despite him being such an amazing actor. I like 10, but towards the end I wanted to see him go.
Matt Smith caught the old man in a young body perfectly, and the older he got, the sadder, happier, angrier he got, which was great.

True that. We had so little time with 9. I love Ten. He’s my Doctor, but yes, when he went it was the right time. I love Ten, but I grew very very fond of Eleven.

Ten was great, he’s not my Doctor, but I really love many of his stories, and David Tennant did an amazing job. His Doctor was fantastic, but yeah I think most of The Doctor’s reach a point, especially maybe 1,4,5,10 where they needed to go, for an injection of fresh blood.

True that. I still have yet to see Four change into Five. A friend of mine, however is quite excited to see my reaction given the fact that I took a year off of Doctor Who before I could move on from Ten and finally watch Eleven.

Ah see well I’m not a huge fan of 4, I know that’s some sort of crazy sacrilege. He’s good, but sometimes, and this is more towards the end of his portrayal, he can be a bit smug. All the Doctors can be smug at points, but with 4 I just find it really annoying.

Not at all! 😀 Everyone has their Doctor. That’s the beauty about a character with fourteen faces. 😀 4 and 10 did get pretty smug towards the end.
